The Zero Hour MUX:
The Joker's Homepage
On Zero Hour MUX [NOTE: New Web page coming soon.], I
play the Joker, Batman's archenemy, scourge of Gotham City, and snappy
dresser. He's always ready with a new bizarre (and often hilarious) plan
to bring the city to it's knees and destroy his opponent. The fact that
these plans, in the end, never work, no longer bothers him at
all, which makes him even more dangerous, since he no longer
believes he has anything to lose by being as nuts as possible. (I also
play Harold Dayton, attorney extraordinaire, for
when the Joker's incarcerated.)
The picture above shows how the Joker is portrayed on Batman: The Animated
Series, which is actually one of the best animated shows on TV. How they
consistently manage to pull off the menace of the Joker without actually
having him kill anybody is one of the great mysteries of television, but
they do it. It's consistently a good program (and it introduced Harley
Quinn, someone who isn't in the comic books, but provides a fun
counterpoint to the Joker's weirdness), and I highly recommend it.
However, that's not why I included the picture. I included it because one
of the most fun things about playing the Joker is that he has been
portrayed in so many striking ways that visually, he's as distinctive as
Batman himself (arguably even more so! I mean, other than that cowl and
cape, all we know is that he has a jaw that looks like a cinderblock was
implanted in it!)
That brings us very nicely to...
The Joker Gallery
To your right, you'll
see pictures from "The Killing Joke", which I used extensively in writing
my application for the Joker. On the far right we see the Joker give his
opinion of the abandoned carnival site where he will make his ploy to
drive Commissioner Gordon insane. (If the image is too small, he's
saying: "Don't like it? I'm crazy for it.")
The other "Killing Joke" picture is of the Joker looking at his mutilated
face for the first time. Talk about your punchlines.
On your left, you'll see
a typical image of the Joker in Arkham Asylum, playing solitaire with his
feet since he is restrained in a straitjacket. ("Shouldn't you be
flapping around a belfry or something?" is what he's saying. Obviously
Batman has visited him (WHY? WHY? WHY?) again.)
When
the Joker asks you to 'Shake.', don't. Just don't. It's not worth it.
On the right is one of the
most striking pictures from the classic "Arkham Asylum". ("Aren't I good
enough to eat?") This disturbing work was entirely done in a style
similar to this: the Joker's words always appeared in blood-spattered red,
and his grin looked absolutely inhuman.
As you can see from the picture on the left, the Joker always brings out
the surreal in artists.
The J-Files
The truth is dull. So LIE!
Here are some files about the Joker you might like to read. Or you might
not. How should I know?
- My application for the Joker.
I didn't even go over it for spelling errors...what you see is what Zero
Hour got.
Logs
Here are some logs of things I've done as the Joker on ZHM:
- The breakout. Tommy and Batman
tussle as the Joker has already escaped.
- The broadcast. The Joker Has
Spoken!
- Arthur Christiansen's House, the
beginning of the latest TP. Commish Gordon, Lieutenant Essen, and Officer
Sami save someone's life, but the Joker gets away with a diamond. And
what, after all, is going on here?
- Agent Barnes reports in. Agent
Barnes of the FCC reports to GCPD headquarters with information about
tracking the Joker's radio broadcast. Chris
Isaak as Agent Barnes (.JPG).
- It's the bomb. The (somewhat
incomplete) log of the police recovering the diamond and disarming one of
the Joker's bombs, with accompaniment by Batman and other Gotham heroes.
- Agent Barnes talks to the
Commish. Commissioner Gordon wants to talk to Agent Barnes about the
various possibilities of catching the Joker.
- The meeting. Sarah and
Commissioner Gordon meet to discuss the case.
- Another visit to Christiansen.
Discrepancies in Christiansen's story arise. What exactly is going on
here? Sarah and Gordon meet with him.
- At The Warehouse. Agent Barnes
tracks down where the Joker's radio equipment came from and went. The
cops move into action.
- Sold American. The Clarridge
Diamond is sold...and the final confrontation between the Joker's
accomplice and the police.
- What Now? Our least favorite
caped crusader meets with the police to discuss the future of the case.
Sarah in a great moment.

Cataglias, a crime family benefitting from the Joker's latest rampage. He
also has a vigilante-to-vigilante chat with the Question, and speculates
with Gordon and Sarah about what's coming next.
- Copycats. A Joker copycat
firebomber is apprehended by the GCPD in Noonans, as the Hitman and
Catwoman alternately assist and look on.
- Disco Ball! That's what the
Batsignal is about as subtle as. Sarah, Gordon and Batman have a chat.
- A Laugh Riot. A Gotham Parent's
League rally turns ugly.

couple of crime scenes, Sarah and Bock on the case, the Question lagging
away.
- Comish II. Batman and Gordon talk

in a mob hit, but the Chinese food is poisoned!
- Shades! The Shade recruits the
Joker for his latest devious scheme. (The Joker is not usually a team
player.)
- Just a few questions. Is the
Gotham crime rate going up or down? And why does the Joker care?
- Fightin's Out Of Style...Fun's
Where The Fear's At...In The future, that is... An elseworlds scene.
JOKER.EXE hires Lobo. But why?
Important Joker Links: Comedy In Action
- A list of good Zero Hour MUX links.
- The Dark Knight
Companion. This is far and away the best Batman reference on the Net,
and it's still under construction. No images or anything like that, just
a big hypertext encyclopedia of all things even vaguely Gothamy.
- The Dark Knight
Joker Page. A pretty good site, very heavy on Batman stuff, though.
More of a 'catalogue' and an overview than in-depth character analysis.
Good for basic facts on the Batman universe. The links page is also nice.
- The Golden
Age Joker Index. An unbelievably cool resource, giving each of the
Joker's appearances in the early years, and scanned pictures of the covers
of many of them. (This is where I got the picture of Batman #1, the
Joker's first appearance ever.) Also good for other Golden Age Batman
stuff.
- The Harley
Quinn Homepage. So she isn't in the mainstream comics. So what?
"Mad Love" is a great book and she's a great person and this is a kicking
site.
More pictures!
These are pictures I didn't want to download, because of space or
preference. Have fun with 'em.
- Joker and
Batman picture, disingenuously named "westin14.jpg". Done by
Johnathan Westin and located in the Dark Knight
Gallery. Approx. 80K.
- Westin2.jpg. Not
half as disturbing, much more 'raw', but at least he knows the Joker's
cohorts are nervous around him. 189K.
- A
classic view, from the Ha-Ha-Cienda.
