Special Master appointment
The appointment of a Special Master is the Supreme Court's usual method of
dealing with the few cases which it has "original jurisdiction" over. The
Supreme Court ordinarily only has "appellate jurisdiction", in reviewing
appeals from lower courts.
Chief Justice Earl Warren
Chief Justice Earl Warren would remove himself from
the consideration of many of the decisions in Arizona v. California
because of his involvement in the case as Attorney General of California
between 1938 and 1942, and as Governor between 1942 and 1950.
