	The second speculation: Was Thomas Jefferson a member of the
Arcanum?  Surprisingly enough, the answer is a firm "Maybe."  He certainly
had contacts with a number of European Arcanists.  His incisive mind would
have served him well in the scholarly atmosphere of that group.  Being on
the frontier of the unknown would have made any Arcanist thrive, and there
are the continuing references to the 'secret hall' under Monticello in
letters of his contemporaries.  However, it is very unlikely that he
participated directly in any Arcanum activities.  He was an extremely busy
man.

Allie,

Whoever wrote this must not have known that the Arcanum did not exist
until the nineteeth century.  Jefferson was long-dead by the time
Holmscroft came around.  Certainly we couldn't have had any impact on the
Revolutionary War, for god's sake!  Particularly not if the rest of the
thesis is true and there was nothing supernatural involved in it at all.
I can't imagine risking the whole Project for just a little more influence
over politics.

Let me know what you find in the Library of Congress.  Can't wait to see
you for Thanksgiving.

Of course there's nothing to the speculation, although there were some
occult investigating secret societies that existed at that time.  An
unperceptive Kindred might mistake one of them for a sort of
proto-Arcanum, and maybe in an intellectual sense, they were.

I also got your phone message.  What telegram are you talking about?  I
never sent you any telegram.
