It is the present day. Although there are some hypertechnologies that have been in the news, they are not mass-produced, and the life of ordinary people is basically the same as it is in the real world. Government support of the insurance industry in the turbulent sixties staved off its collapse under the weight of mutant-related claims. And the space program is a lot more cautious ("What will happen NEXT?") and controlled by the military. This also means that communications satellites are less common and cellphone coverage of the world is about five years behind what it is in the real world. Otherwise there are no differences.
